Ants belong to social insects that live in colonies of many sizes, like bees and wasps. There are many different species of ants. An ant colony consists of a queen, flightless and, as a rule, infertile female workers and, in certain seasons, flightless dogs.
The queen forms the center of the colony. After mating, the female takes her maiden flight and is ready to start a new ant colony. After dropping its wings, it retreats to a hiding place, e.g. under stones, wall crevices, under yard stones, and establishes a new nest. Here it begins the production of eggs and raises the first workers itself.
After the birth of the first infertile workers, the queen dedicates herself solely to the production of eggs. The workers take responsibility for the care and rearing of the eggs, larvae and cocoons, as well as searching for food.
First, the initial stages and formation of a very small ant community are difficult to detect and remain unnoticed for a long time. It is often only in the second or third year that it can become a problem for a person. The strong increase in the number of ants leads to occasional appearances of workers in huge hordes as they search for food and water in their surroundings.
However, the ants on the foraging journey only represent a very small number
part of the ant society. A much larger proportion of ants live hidden in the nest cavity, taking care of the queen and the care of the offspring. This division of labor, typical of ants, has a decisive influence on the choice of control methods.
Controlling ants with Loxira's Ant Buffet.
Only the workers of the ant society appear on the surface of the earth. A direct fight against these terrestrial ants, even in large numbers, does not lead to the destruction of the entire colony, because the young hidden in the nest and the queen remain untouched. After a very short period, the new workers grow into adults and the new mass demonstrations are once again a problem for people.
For the complete elimination of ants, a method must be chosen that also destroys the queen and the eggs, so that no new offspring are born.
In this case, Loxiran's Ant buffet is a very effective means of control against ants. The refillable bait containers are filled with a bait solution that contains food that attracts ants and other bait ingredients and spinosad pesticide. The workers on their foraging journey notice the juicy bait and start carrying it to the nest for other ants to eat. The lethal effect of the bait deliberately does not start immediately, but only for a few days
after. after. It follows from this that before they themselves die from the effect of the substance, they have time to take a sufficient amount of the pesticide into the nest and feed it to the queen and her chicks.
Ants build extensive networks underground that run both horizontally and vertically. The extent of the network can be several meters in each direction. Depending on the size of the anthill, it may take a few weeks to control the ants - until it is completely destroyed.
To destroy very large ant nests, it is recommended to place several ant boxes near the nest. This is how you ensure the most effective protection possible.
As soon as you notice that the Ant Buffet box has run out of bait, fill the box again. Wash the boxes after successful control so that they are ready for possible new use.
Special about ants eating
From time to time it can be observed that the ants do not care about the bait, despite the attractive ingredients. This can be for the following reasons:
At a certain stage of its development
ants are dependent on protein-rich food. During this period, the carbohydrate-rich food in Loxira's Muurais buffet remains intact. Immediately after this "protein season", the workers again start carrying bait to the nest for others to enjoy.

Just before and during the maiden flight, the ants do not eat anything. During this time, the ants only focus on watching the winged dogs and new queens fly away. Right after the maiden flight, the bait goes on sale again.
If the ants living indoors haven't eaten the bait after more than a week, it could be pharaoh ants. These pharaoh ants, which are clearly smaller than sugar ants, about 2 mm in size, were transported to Europe from subtropical and tropical regions in the last century. They need a lot of heat and therefore nest in European climates only in human settlements.
The pharaoh ant prefers fresh, protein-rich food and uses carbohydrate-rich food only as a supplement. Ordinary ant baits are not suitable for the control of these pharaoh ants, in such a case the problem ant species must be identified and the control started with special baits. The ordinary baits have been developed specifically for the control of numerous domestic species that occur in Finland.
