Insect hotels For nesting and winter shelter
Insects are very useful for nature and humans. These little helpers, such as ladybugs and bees, pollinate flowers or take care of the ecological balance of the garden, terrace or balcony by exterminating insect pests.
We want to keep gardens and yards clean, so there are often too few twigs and piles of leaves around the yard that are suitable for insects to live in. Insect hotels are especially suitable for urban environments and clean, well-maintained yards. Even if you only own a balcony or terrace, you can provide useful insects with comfortable accommodation and maintenance.

About ladybugs:
Ladybugs
The best-known member of the ladybird family is the seven-spotted woodpecker, whose points, contrary to popular belief, do not indicate its age. Ladybugs are beneficial inhabitants of the garden in every way, they destroy large numbers of aphids and thus act as natural plant protection units.

Adult individuals overwinter on the ground, sheltered by leaves, moss and grass. They often form groups of several individuals for this purpose. The living rooms, on the other hand, are for wintering, there is no food in them and the air is too dry.

After mating in the spring, the female lays about 400 eggs on the undersides of plant leaves covered with aphids. The larvae that hatch from the eggs use aphids for food; during its lifetime, one larva can destroy about 400 aphids. After several molts and cocoons, an adult ladybug hatches, and the cycle begins all over again. Development from egg to adult takes 1-2 months. A maximum of two generations can therefore be born in one year. Adult individuals live to be about one year old.

In actively arranged gardens, ladybugs have fewer and fewer opportunities for protection and wintering; for this they simply need only a layer of leaves or bark on the surface of the ground, otherwise they will freeze to death in the cold season. In the dry bark piles of the insect hotel, they have a good time in the winter. Here they are protected from rain and wind and also well protected from predators.

Where is the insect hotel set up?

The insect hotel should be hung in a sunny place, protected from wind and rain, preferably in the southern direction (southwest, south, southeast) at a height of 1-2 meters, above the vegetation. A wall of a house or garage, a hedge or a tree support is also suitable as a hanging place. Ideally, there should be plants that produce pollen and nectar near the insect hotel. Wild bees and other beneficial insects can settle even on the 5th floor of an urban apartment building!
